The founder, president and principal consultant of The Material Solution LLC is Mr. Richard (Rick) Heggs.   Mr. Heggs has over 38 years’ experience in the specialty chemical and polymer industry including 30 years in contract research, project management, business development, line management and executive sales at Battelle Memorial Institute.   This experience spans a wide range of end market applications.  The markets Mr. Heggs has dealt with include Medical Devices, Packaging, Energy Storage and Transmission, Alternative Energy, Water Treatment, Telecommunications, Consumer Products, Automotive, Paints and Coatings, Building and Construction, Office Furniture, and others.  Mr. Heggs has extensive materials processing experience with a focus on thermoplastic and thermoset polymers.  This includes in depth knowledge of injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, thermoforming and composites.   

Mr. Heggs for the last 30 years has been a senior member of Battelle's Advanced Materials Group.  Battelle is the world's largest independent contract research organization with over 4000 employees and 120 locations worldwide.  Battelle also manages 6 national laboratories for the Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security.  The material group at Battelle is one of the mainstays of the Institute with over 75 years of continuous innovation.  Mr. Heggs joined this group in 1985 and since that time has been instrumental in guiding the group in its research focus and growth.  Most recently he has been responsible for management and development of three areas of strategic importance to Battelle: Materials from Renewable Sources, Specialty Chemical Development and Biomimetic Materials.  Mr. Heggs is a trained chemist who has worked in the areas of specialty chemical development, lubricants, plasticizers, binders, coupling agents, crosslinkers, peroxides and adhesives and coatings.  Mr. Heggs has experience with polyurethanes, silianes, polyesters, nylons, polyolefins, polysulphones, fluoropolymers and elastomers, PVC, PEEK, PEK, silicone elastomers and fluids, acrylics, acetals and others. The broad reach of these experiences gives Mr. Heggs a unique ability to view material issues from a fundamental chemical understanding and  transfer technology between disciplines and to see opportunities for solutions that rely upon subject breadth as well as technical depth.  Mr. Heggs patents are listed below and show the breadth of his research interests. 

Currently Mr. Heggs is vice-chair of the Board of Directors for Polymer Ohio and Ohio Manufacturing as well as on the Board of Advisers for OBIC the Ohio Bioproducts Innovation Center.  As a member of these boards Mr. Heggs has contacts with hundreds of polymer processors, tool makers, OEMs and bioproduct manufacturers.
